What the problem looked like

Every school we sit with describes the same shape of problem in different words: the same information typed into three places, and no single answer to a question a parent asks at the gate. The detail changes, the shape does not.

• One record per student, not one per system.
• One login, so nobody keeps a password list in a drawer.
• Reports that add up, because they read from the same numbers.

What we changed

The change itself is usually small. The work is in deciding which small change is the one that matters, and that decision is made in a staff room rather than at a desk.
